Integrity Investigations
Owner: Brandy Lord
Location: South Bend, IN

"Working with the SBDC has been a blessing for me and my business. They helped me get organized, start things off on the right foot, and stay on track," said Brandy, encouraging small businesses, whether they are starting-up or already in-business to seek the advice of the SBDC.

Integrity Logo Brandy first came to the SBDC for start-up assistance including business planning, financing, marketing, and management. Now, her focus is on growth!Working with her advisor, Jan Fye, Brandy officially opened her business April 6, 2004. As Brandy worked with Jan, they addressed a variety of issues including pricing, working her prospect list, collection policies, sales and marketing, and more.

As Integrity Investigations continued to grow, Brandy was encouraged to concentrate on marketing her business. In the Spring of 2008, she began work with students at Purdue University South Bend to totally redesign all her marketing materials. This project is part of the Collegiate Management Assistance Program, a cooperative effort between the SBDC and local college professors who have students work on client projects. Brandy is receiving assistance at no cost to her from a team of students, guided by their professor, who are extremely talented and dedicated to bringing her a product that reflects her personally as well as professionally.

Brandy has now established her business and employment has stayed fairly constant with 7-8 employees. She receives constant feedback from clients that she is their choice mainly because of her professionalism and immediate attention to their needs. Sales have grown by 1726% in the four years she has been in business.

Hydro Edge
Owner: Tim Abbott
Location: South Bend, IN

"Throughout the whole process, the SBDC was my guiding light," said Tim, maintaining he could not have gotten his sprinkler system to
market without their advice and assistance.

Tim Abbott came to the South Bend Small Business Development Center to ask for patent assistance for a small sprinkler head, Hydro Edge, that he developed for use in the plastic edging around flowerbeds.  After he discussed the idea with SBDC Associate Director Jim Gregar, a meeting was arranged with a patent attorney for the next week.  Jim also got Tim involved in the Collegiate Management Assistance Program and found a professor at the University of Notre Dame, teaching an entrepreneurship class, where students would help with a feasibility study.

After attending seminars at the SBDC on starting a business and writing a business plan, Tim started his company called Irrigation Systems, Inc.  He found a retired patent attorney and gave him stock in the company in exchange for his work to apply for a patent.  Tim also arranged with the owner of a local plastic company to make a prototype of his sprinkler head in exchange for an equity position in the company.

The Notre Dame students conducted considerable research and presented a good feasibility study, determining that there was indeed a market for Tim's sprinkler system.  Meanwhile, Jim had introduced him to other entrepreneurs who had successful inventions and they encouraged Tim to proceed with his invention and try to get the product to market.  Jim researched the Internet to find data through trade associations, and the next year Jim and Tim attended the Hardware Trade Show in Chicago and became aware of many of the competitors in the lawn landscape industry as well as new products on the market.

Through the SBDC, Tim was introduced to the Technical Assistance Program at Purdue University where engineering professors did a study and identified the correct design for the sprinkler head, including appropriate water pressure.  Tim designed it to have flow control and a nozzle that could be pointed in different directions.

The year after the patent was approved, Tim worked on packaging for the product and took on two more partners with expertise in sales and marketing.  The SBDC encouraged Tim to consider QVC as a possible avenue for his product and Tim took the advice.  He went to Philadelphia to demonstrate his invention to QVC evaluators and they accepted his product with minor modifications.  Tim will be flying to QVC training in March 2005 and his product will be displayed in a live show in April 2005!

After spending another year working with mold makers and local plastic companies, Tim and his partners located a company in Texas, Easy Gardener, that was interested in his sprinkler system.  Tim spent six months negotiating a 10-year agreement with them and finally settled on a $100,000 cash deal up front with a 10-year contract giving Easy Gardener the rights to handle his invention in exchange for 5% royalties.  A local newspaper printed the account of how Tim has successfully marketed his product, and he was recently asked to speak to an MBA class at Notre Dame to recount his business story to the students.  Hydro Edge is currently being shipped to all Home Depots nationwide, 1,000 Lowe's, 800 Wal-Marts and small hardware chains such as True Value, Ace Hardware, and Do-It-Best.

PentaVision Communications
Location: South Bend, IN
"...We owe a great deal of our successs to the SBDC for their continued assistance in getting our business off the ground, for it has allowed us to focus on improving our operations and growing our company."  says Ryan Geist, owner of PentaVision Communications, Inc.

In March 2002 Ryan Geist, an owner of PentaVision Communications, Inc., met with the South Bend Small Business Development Center Business Advisor, Mel Waks.  PentaVision Communications, Inc., is a full-service video/media production company located in South Bend, Indiana, offering professional video services to a variety of companies throughout the Midwest.  The purpose of the first meeting was to discuss company structure and basic organizational planning (functions, salaries, officers, etc.).  Since there were 5 equal owners, Mel advised establishing the company as an S-Corporation.

As meetings continued, Mel worked with the company in reviewing business plans, developing strategies for commerical loans, and the value of equipment purchase versus lease.  Later in 2002, the SBDC assisted PentaVision with obtaining a $50,000 line of credit with 1st Source Bank.

After the business was operating for about a year, the SBDC suggested that the company consider participating in a corporate analysis through the Notre Dame MBA program - a project they found extremely beneficial.  "I personally fell tht the information we received from this analysis [Collegiate Management Assistance Program] and the SBDC feedbak gave all of us the business decision tools necessary to improve our business operations.  One suggestion that the MBA students made was to purchase our own editing system.  I often look to the decision we made of actually buying our editing system as being the best decision we have made.  It has also greatly affected our bottom line and made us a much more profitable company".

In their short history, PentaVision has received six noteworthy national awards for programs that they have either provided production assistance or completely produced.  The SBDC worked with them to "advertise" that fact through press releases with the local media.

As Ryan and his colleagues grew the business, they found that 30% of their revenues were with one client.  The SBDC counseled for diversification in client base and helped develop a plan for gaining new clients.  The SBDC has most recently assisted Ryan, as he expands his sales force, with an analysis of hiring staff versus using commissioned sales reps.

PentaVision has established an impressive client list: the University of Notre Dame, NBC Sports, Hoosier Tire Company, The Braun Corporation, ESPN, Faith & Values Television, Ivy Tech State College, Indiana University South Bend, and Saint Mary's College.  Sales for 2003 were $378,500 and in 2004 had grown by 17% to over $456,000!  In 2005, PentaVision continues to review business operations for possible improvements, and will be adding a full-time marketing executive in the 1st quater to further business growth.
